An Ice Cream Lover's Guide to Berkeley

For all you ice cream lovers in the Berkeley area, this guide is for you. This is by no means a full guide to all the ice cream in Berkeley, these are simply the ones closest to UC Berkeley that are generally popular. There are more a bit further, but these are the ones that I think are most popular with students that I think are worth mentioning.

Gadani

their specialty

fresh made Hong Kong egg waffles with your ice cream

the details

The actual ice cream is pretty average, but what really makes it is the egg waffle. The waffle is freshly made as soon as you order it, which means that you get a warm and crunchy waffle with your ice cream.

There's room for a ton of customization ― you get to choose your waffle flavor, ice cream flavor, and toppings. Waffle flavors include churro, banana chip, chocolate, and chocolate strawberry. Toppings include rose petals, cookie crumbs, rose petals, caramel drizzle, and matcha powder.

To get the full experience, the ice cream combo is the way to go. You get an egg waffle with a flavor of your choosing, ice cream with a flavor of your choosing, and two complimentary toppings.

While the ice cream itself is already a gorgeous feat, you know that this place is meant for Instagram because it has a decorated wall that is undoubtedly meant for taking photos of your ice cream.

+ customization

price

The downside of this is that it's pretty pricey. The ice cream combo is about $8. However, it is a very large serving.

Cream

their specialty

any ice cream sandwich, but cookie ice cream sandwiches are the classic Cream order.

the details

Cream's ice cream sandwiches are their signature and you can customize them. You get to pick out your base (aka what holds your ice cream) from choices of a cookie, brownie, donut, or a waffle. The most popular option is the cookies and you get to choose from many different flavors of freshly baked cookies. Some of the options include snickerdoodle cookies, sugar cookies, chocolate chip cookies, oatmeal cookies, and red velvet cookies. After that, you can pick your ice cream. You can also get toppings for extra.

I always get the chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwich and switch up the flavor of ice cream. Honestly Cream isn't really much of a novel idea, it's just a classic idea that everyone likes. The ice cream is really rich and the cookies always come right out of the oven so they're crisp and warm. In the case of the chocolate chip cookies, the chocolate is still melty.

Along with their famous ice cream sandwiches, they also have ice cream tacos, sundaes, milkshakes, and everything else you want from an ice cream place.

There's usually a line because it's so popular, but it moves pretty quickly.

+ vegan / gluten-free / dairy free options

price

The cost of a cookie ice cream sandwich is about $4.

Ben & Jerry's

their specialty

it's Ben & Jerry's.

the details

I debated about whether or not to include Ben & Jerry's since it is such a large chain, but this is a guide for ice cream lovers and ice cream lovers can love Ben & Jerry's.

I think that Ben & Jerry's is my favorite large scale ice cream chain. I love how cute and quirky the names of their flavors are and I think that their flavors are super unique and creative. I also really love the texture of their ice cream with all of the added textures from the mix-ins and the ice cream itself just has an all around good mouthfeel.

bonus points

+ classic
+ vegan options

price
Around $4.25 for a small cup or cone, ranges up to $9 for sundaes.

Uji Time Dessert

their specialty

taiyaki cones and Japanese flavored soft serve

the details

Uji Time Dessert is known for their Japanese soft serve and taiyaki cones. If you don't know what taiyaki is, they're essentially Japanese waffle/pancakes that are shaped into fish. The traditional taiyaki is usually filled with red bean paste and has more of a pancake-like texture, but the taiyaki cones are more like waffles (more crisp and structured).

You get to pick your cone (taiyaki, waffle cone, cup), a filling (either nutella or red bean), your soft serve flavor, and then add toppings for an extra price.

You can get the soft serve without the taiyaki cone as well and get a normal cone or a cup for a lower price. Other options are also parfaits or mochi ice cream.

I feel like the biggest downside of Uji is that they don't have a lot of flavor options. They have four flavors ― tofu, black sesame, matcha, and a seasonal flavor. If you like those flavors or if you like getting one thing over and over again, then it's perfect for you. Otherwise, it's a bit of a limitation if you prefer variety or aren't a fan of those four flavors.

+ unique flavors

price

The cost of a taiyaki cone is about $6, but I think that it's a pretty reasonable price if you like the novelty of the taiyaki.

Almare Gelato Italiano

their specialty

gelato

the details

Unlike most of the previous mentioned ice creams, Almare Gelato Italiano takes a more traditional approach. The shop is meant to recreate the atmosphere of an Italian gelateria and they aim to serve a traditional tasting gelato.

There's a small seating area and it's cute and cozy. However, note that there's a $5 minimum for paying with credit. For anything less than $5, you'll need to pay with cash.

price

$3.25 for a single scoop. Add a dollar for every extra scoop.
